The sledge hammer/telescope photos are from a demo put on for reunion attendees. Says Charles of the experience: "Sat am physics class. Experiment re momentum and inertia. There are many technical details to make it safe (neck not on nails for instance, cinder block which crunches on impact, plank on my abdomen to spread force over a wide area, and of course so many nails (3918!) so close together that the contact surface area(s) is/are not too small). The sledger is Clyfe Beckwith, head of Science Division. In another experiment, Arnon Mishkin's daughter foiled the van der Graaf generator's expected effect on her hair by apparently using anti-static shampoo. Maia participated in a sensor experiment (plotting a person's displacement based on radar type reflections off their body). Finally, Pierre and Marianne arrived in time to look at sunspots in the PA observatory telescopes, for which daddy oriented him appropriately."
